What is DNS propagation?
DNS propagation is the process of DNS record changes being distributed across the global network of DNS resolvers. When you update a record, resolvers around the world still have the old record cached. As caches expire (based on TTL), resolvers fetch the new record. Full propagation typically takes 1 to 48 hours.
Why do DNS changes take so long to propagate?
DNS resolvers cache records for the duration specified by the TTL (Time to Live) value. If your record had a TTL of 86400 (24 hours), resolvers may serve the old record for up to 24 hours. Lowering TTL before making changes reduces propagation time. ISP resolvers sometimes ignore TTL and cache longer.
How can I speed up DNS propagation?
Lower your TTL to 300 seconds (5 minutes) at least 24-48 hours before making changes. After the change, resolvers will refresh within 5 minutes. Once propagation is complete, raise the TTL back to a higher value (3600-86400) for better caching performance.
What resolvers does this tool check?
We query Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1), Quad9 (9.9.9.9), OpenDNS (208.67.222.222), Comodo DNS (8.26.56.26), and additional regional resolvers. This gives you a complete view of global propagation status.
What does it mean if some resolvers show different results?
Different results across resolvers indicate that propagation is still in progress. Resolvers with the old record have not yet refreshed their cache. This is normal after a DNS change and resolves itself as caches expire. If inconsistency persists beyond 48 hours, there may be a configuration issue.
Can I check propagation for any DNS record type?
